You’ll see the benefits now and later when you document your family with photos.
Celebrate Your Family’s Unique History
Generational photos are a good way to bring the story of your family into focus. Having visual evidence of who “their people” are gives children a sense of identity and belonging.
Here’s a great article on how family photos boost your child’s self esteem.
In addition, if your family has a story of strength and hard work overcoming adversity, it’s even more important to share it. I was contacted to take photos of this large family in Trumbull, but I had no idea why it was so important. I thought it was a family who were celebrating being reunited after the long days of Covid lock down.
It turns out that this family’s story goes back far beyond the hardship of Covid. Decades earlier, the brave grandparents from this family escaped the brutal reign of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Now they live and thrive in the United States. They gave their family a better start, and look how far they’ve come!
These three children and five beautiful grandchildren born in the U.S. are a testament to their work ethic and grit.
Certainly, if you’re getting together with your large (or small!) family, a family party photo session will be a fun activity. Plus, you’ll get the memories to pass down to the future generations.
However, the family archive should include photos of all the generations, no matter what your family’s story is. Your family stories are important and need to be shared and documented.
