Anatomy of a Family Photo Session
Behind the Scenes Look at What the Heck Really Goes on During an In-Home Family Photo Session
Ready, Set…
Let’s go get some awesome photos at a family photo session at a real home! Today, I’m off to visit a lovely family in New Canaan. They had their second adorable little girl a few months ago.
I first photographed them when they were a family of three at a day of mini sessions at Weir Farm in Wilton.
Since little sister has arrived, it’s tons easier to stay at home to do the session. Not only is everyone is a little more relaxed, but naps and snacks are easily accessible. It also gives plenty of opportunities to capture baby’s first home and nursery, and to even let the family pooch get in the photos.
First stop: the nursery
Upon arrival, I had a quick tour around the house, looking for the best available light. It doesn’t have to be a super bright room, any room with a window is good enough for some great family photos.
After a speed play date with big sister, we decided to start the session in the nursery. Since baby just opened her eyes from her morning nap, we started slowly and picked up the pace as we went along. Mom and baby were happy saying good morning by the window.
While I took a seat on the floor, big sister decided to entertain us with her latest dance moves. The baby and mom were a great audience, and now big sister was relaxed and ready to move on and show me where we should do the rest of the photo session.
Next Stop: Dad in The Living Room
Dad finally gets his chance to shine with a quick snuggle stop by the window in the living room. (Great light for photos!) Any distractions like chairs and photos were moved out of the frame, and we were able to capture some wonderful expressions by the big window. Although the family’s dog loved being in the middle of the action, (see above left) she was able to roam around without being in the way.
Let’s Get Down
Since the light in the living room was just right, we decided to stop right there and get some awesome baby photos. All we needed was a couple of blankets on the floor, and mom making faces. No big props, no time-consuming set ups, and this 5 month old baby was in heaven.
